Hello
all, I don't post very often, and apologies for the delay (had to spend sometime with the family and get back to the more mundane daily activities like the school run), but I thought you would all like to know a few more details about the Crystal Serenity event. Kevin, Stuart and I were due to go to the LAMDA gala this evening, but because it was cancelled/postponed we were very lucky to have been invited to the christening ceremony at Southampton. It was a very long but extremely exciting day., We did not know what to expect, but by all accounts it was the most glamorous launch of a cruise liner - possibly ever! Julie stayed overnight on board the ship and came out on cue at 12.00noon. You will have already seen pictures of how lovely she looked - a splash of colour amongst a sea of black and white (the dress code on the invitation). We were seated in the fifth row, the first four being reserved for the 'A' list, mainly from America and Japan. In fact, almost all the 400 guests had either been flown in the day before, or were due to sail on Serenity on her maiden voyage on Monday! (Have I got a spare £22,000 for the 2-week voyage?) The LAMDA choir sang songs with a nautical theme before the event, and then proceeded to sing from Star!, SOM and MFL. Julie made a mention of them in her speech, and also looked round when they struck up MFL as she was leaving the stage. The ceremony lasted about 45 minutes, with many long lenses and camera/tv crews from around the world. There was top security too - we even had to leave our passports at reception(!) after having had security checks before getting our tickets, walk through metal detectors and sip champagne and nibble on caviar, lobster and smoked salmon canapés whilst sniffer dogs led their handlers around the marquee and stage/podium. Julie was in fine form and looked very relaxed. She spoke about how lovely it was to be back home for such a wonderful event; she thanked the choir and Crystal Cruises for their support of Bay Street Theatre (aha! a connection!) and she said how she had never been called upon to christen a ship in all her long career. She was very good and attentive to the media, asking if they were ready before releasing the 6 litre bottle of champagne. The bottle is only one of four ever to be commissioned, at £1000 a bottle (the other two were used to christen the two sister ships). There was such an explosive bang when Julie sent the bottle smashing against against the ship's hull. I am surprised Julie didn't get showered with champagne and glass! She was obviously very pleased everything went well - she even kissed Gregg L. Michel, the president of Crystal Cruises. I didn't see anyone I recognised with her ... After the ceremony Julie had a quick drink (orange based through a straw) and sat down with her back to everyone whilst someone (now sure who, middle-aged tall chap with grey hair) ran his fingers through her hair. She then came forward to meet the assembled press, although there was such tight security no one else could get through. However, we saw it all from just a few feet away and heard every word. Julie said we were going to absolutely love her in Shrek II. When asked if she was going to be a difficult director for the BF Julie replied that she was going to be wonderful ... or words to that effect! We all went through into the Crystal Dining Room for the christening ceremony luncheon - Julie of course sat the the table in the middle, surrounded by a glass screen. The dinner service was Wedgewood china, the glasses were exquisite crystal and the food was just out of this world. Julie had about an hour for lunch before being whisked away to give interviews (back-to-back) between 2.30 - 6.30, including live satellite link-ups to television shows in the UK and USA. (Hope some of you saw them!) the guests were offered escorted tours of the ship ... and what a luxurious beauty she is ... including some of the cabins, and a penthouse suite similar to the one Julie was staying in and another where Julie was being interviewed. Her deck was closed off, of course, as the president and the owner of Serenity were also staying on board. Unfortunately all guests not staying the night had to leave by 5,00! We were told that Julie was going to London the next day to do an interview for the BBC Frost programme to be screened on Sunday morning, and that she would be leaving for the US on Sunday in order to get back for rehearsals on Monday! Julie looked absolutely divine - I only wish Crystal Cruises would release their video of the whole ceremony. The newspapers in the UK have had surprisingly little coverage the following day - hopefully some of the magazines will carry it in their forthcoming publications. Anyway, must be off - hope you enjoyed reading of our adventures. Kevin might add to it, but he is not due to return home until later in the weekend. Some of my photos are now on Anders' website - I know both he and Elaine have already posted the address to the list. Enjoy! Jean |
